Geotic
January, by routine, is a sad month. Think of old pagan/whatever rituals about the death of the year, and you’re somewhere near. It’s still dark, with a bite of frost in the air, and an indeterminable ‘start’ until work begins again. Daylight is a rarity. All the worst parts of winter are present without the sense of occasion, the optimism. Everyone’s penniless, fat and smoking, still. So stay in bed, curtains closed, and brood.
This would be the very music to brood to. The side-project of Baths, Geotic is a very, very beautiful, serene style of layered, textured guitar music. Without percussion and a determined sense of direction, it’s the perfect, dark anthem for lying very still indeed.
There’s nothing bleak or unhappy about Geotic, far from it. However, it verges into the right side of the blissful melancholy. Musically, its ethereal, soft drone calls to mind something of the post-rock of Do Make Say Think. Always a good thing.
