“Hey Paul Carlin!” guest mix

Paul Carlin is a cool guy. Drummer for Dananananaykroyd and American Men, he also plays guitar and sings with his Ghost Pants project. Turns out he also makes a mean mixtape. He said a thing about each song, and from what I recall he actually talks in Italics.

1. WOMEN »  SERVICE ANIMAL (from SERVICE ANIMAL/GREY SKIES 7” on  JAGJAGUAR)

Okay, so this Women track is from a 7” they released just after their pretty amazing PUBLIC STRAIN LP last year. If you’ve never heard Public Strain, do everything within your power to do so. It’s a magical record full of Sonic Youth-playing-Zombies-songs charm produced beautifully by Chad VanGaalen.

 2. STEPHEN MALKMUS AND THE JICKS » SENATOR (from MIRROR TRAFFIC LP on MATADOR)

As far as I’m concerned, Stephen Malkmus needed to write a song like Senator in order to make me believe that he’s still a genius. The most recent LP, Real Emotional Trash, was dense and proggy (although still great) - however, it’s a real joy to hear him come back with this amazing track that sounds as vibrant as his first solo LP.

(IVOR CUTLER » FISTYMAN)

3. CLOUD NOTHINGS » CAN’T STAY AWAKE (from TURNING ON E.P. on WICHITA)

Cloud Nothings have no right being in my record collection on account of the Internet hyping the fuck out of them. The music, however, is awesome and they get better and better. This year’s eponymous LP is well worth your time and should be blasted as loud as possible on sunny days.

4. PRINCE » GOTTA STOP (MESSIN’ ABOUT) (7” single on WARNER BROS)

Here’s a rare Prince single from 1981 that John from my band played to me and I thought it was Devo at first. Dirty Mind is Prince’s best LP and this was from that era. It’s actually AMAZING. You could do a lot worse than invest some time in 1980-86 Prince.

(BROTHER RAVEN  INTRO)

5. FUCKED UP » SERVE ME RIGHT (from DAVID COMES TO LIFE LP on MATADOR)

Fucked Up are the best at pop music. This is pop music, right? New LP, DAVID COMES TO LIFE, is exhausting but an absolutely essential purchase if you have even heard of guitars.

6. CAVEMAN » OLD FRIEND (from self-released COCO BEWARE LP)

I do not know much about Caveman other than D.Roy from my band told me about them and his recommendations are usually spot-on. This was no exception. Their upcoming LP is called CoCo Beware FFS! Dreamy. Lovely. Can’t wait to hear more from this lot.

7. 18 CARAT AFFAIR » THE GYMNAST (from self-released 60/40 LP)

The 18 Carat Affair LP, 60/40, is like listening to an AM radio playing early 80s dance/soul music except through a neighbour’s wall. I know that sounds ridiculous but the album, full of really REALLY short songs (apart from this one) flows beautifully and those with a passing interest in THE PAST should investigate.

(FOUR TET » PABLO’S HEART)

8. COUSINS » SECRET WEAPON (from self-released SECRET WEAPON/SPEECH 7”)

Cousins come from Canada, where all the best bands come from. I spent FIVE DOLLARS on TWO FUCKING SONGS because they’re both GREAT. Obviously.

9. BEACH FOSSILS (w/ JACK TATUM) » OUT IN THE WAY (from WHAT A PLEASURE E.P. on CAPTURED TRACKS)

Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing both made great LPs last year. This is my favourite track from the latest BF EP which has WN’s Jack Tatum all over it. Both bands have new material on the way and I believe WN are touring at the end of the summer. Go see.

(U.S. MAPLE » THE STATE IS BAD)

10. BLOODHOUSE » ENDLESS VACATION (from self-released BAD VIBRATIONS/BLOODHOUSE split)

Bloodhouse are also from Canada and play what I call DOOM INDIE. They remind me of Built To Spill except with more distortion than actually exists in the world if that is even possible. They have free music up on their Bandcamp page. Download it and listen on headphones. Grizzly.
